Wing side mirror: driver side vs passenger side
Left or right? Here is how to identify the correct wing side mirror on an Irish right-hand-drive car.
Quick answer
| Side | Also called | Position in Ireland |
|---|---|---|
| Driver's side | Offside, right-hand | Right-hand side of the car |
| Passenger side | Nearside, left-hand | Left-hand side, nearest the kerb |
Always judge left and right as if you were sitting in the driver's seat, looking forward.
Why the sides are different
The driver's side glass is commonly flatter, giving a more accurate sense of distance. The passenger side is often convex or aspheric to widen the view of the blind spot on the kerb side. Because of this, you cannot swap the glass from side to side.
Wiring and features per side
Each side has its own wiring path through the door. Heating, folding, blind spot warning and indicators are usually mirrored on both sides, but the plug and mounting hand are opposite.
Imported cars
UK cars are also right-hand drive and generally match Irish cars. Left-hand-drive imports from continental Europe will have a different specification. Always give us your exact car and registration if you are unsure.
How to avoid ordering the wrong side
- Sit in the driver's seat and decide which mirror is damaged.
- Write down "driver side (right)" or "passenger side (left)".
- Include this in your enquiry together with your registration.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the driver's side wing mirror in Ireland?
The right-hand side (offside), because Irish cars are right-hand drive.
Which is the passenger side wing mirror in Ireland?
The left-hand side (nearside), the one closest to the kerb.
Are the left and right wing mirror glasses different?
Yes. They are mirror images in shape, and the glass curvature often differs between sides.
Can I use a UK or Irish mirror on a left-hand-drive import?
Not as a straight swap. Left-hand-drive cars have mirrors designed for the opposite sides, so be careful with imports.
