Mirror for wing mirror: choosing the right replacement

Glass, cap or the whole unit? Here is how to work out which mirror you need for your wing mirror.

What do you need to replace?

When people search for a mirror for a wing mirror they usually mean one of three things. Knowing which one saves money.

1. Mirror glass only

The reflective plate that clips into the housing. If it is cracked, scratched or has fallen out but the casing and motor still work, this is the cheapest option. Glass is side specific and may be heated.

2. Mirror cap or cover

The coloured plastic shell on the back of the mirror. Caps often get scraped in car parks and can be replaced on their own, usually in primer to be painted or in your car's colour.

3. Complete mirror unit

Includes the housing, glass, motor, wiring and often the indicator. This is the right choice if the casing is broken, the electrics have failed or the mount is damaged.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mirror part inside a wing mirror called?

It is the mirror glass, sometimes called the mirror plate. It clips onto a backing plate that sits on the adjustment motor inside the housing.

Can I buy just the mirror for my wing mirror?

Yes. If the housing is fine, you can order replacement glass for the correct side, with heating if your car has it.

Will the mirror glass fit both sides?

No. Left and right glass are different shapes and often different curvature, so you must order the correct side.
